The Last of Us – Video Game Review

A1dXfW1yPNL._SL1500_I don’t have time to play video games anymore. At least, that is my mantra when I try to defend my geekdom. However, every now and again I find time to squeeze it in. Let’s just say the past three days have been completely occupied with completing this game. I kept thinking about it, needing to know how the story would end. Would Ellie and Joel make it to the Fireflies (the revolutionary militia fighters) who could help them save the world? This game has been out for a few years, but as usual I’m just getting to it now. Always late to the gate.

Now zombies are not my thing or so I have thought for the past decade. But between The Walking Dead show/game and now this, I am starting to feel afflicted with the zombie fan craze. There is something about it that sucks you in slowly. Maybe the possibility that some form of zombie-ism could actually happen. The possibility of the unknown.

The Last of Us is a Naughty Dog creation, and an awesome one at that. The story and the character creation is very well done and I just can’t say enough about this game. I play for story and not challenge, but even on normal mode this game is appropriately challenging. The feelings are real in this game, and as the player I felt connected to Ellie and Joel more than most other games I have played. I see now, why this game was an award winner.

This is not just a horror game, it’s a love story, the kind of love between a father and a daughter that just happens to take place in a horrific time. You will be moved, you will be scared, you will be angry, happy and confused. This game is worth the twenty bucks I spent on it, plus more.

You can play it on PS3, and a remastered version has been released for PS4.

The game features a combination of combat, exploration, stealth and platforming game mechanics. Although Joel and Ellie are both residents of a post-apocalyptic world, they have had different experiences that affect the way they see the world around them, and feel about what they see and do. Joel had a life before the pandemic, while the world of the pandemic is all that Ellie has ever known. As part of Joel’s job to smuggle Ellie out of the quarantine zone, players have to make choices in how they deal with enemies, which include, roving gangs of human scavengers not unlike themselves, military elements and infected civilians. Player also have opportunity to together interact with elements of the world around them, which helps to build the bond between Joel and Ellie. Resources in the game are scarce, making overwhelming use of firepower unlikely and unwise in conflicts, and resource gathering missions. In addition, most other residents of the ruined world that are encountered are just trying to survive – blurring the line between good guys and bad guys. Finally, game AI react differently depending on the specifics of the player’s actions, making choice in gameplay a major consideration.
